As you might know every year or two I try to do something to do my bit for The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. I started my build-up of physical pain a few years ago by completing the 10K Shaftesbury Gold Hill Run in my old boots and since then started to cycle and completed The Ride 100 long distance challenge – a long way in one morning!

However, this year, with less than 3 weeks to go I am sure I have volunteered to do something which might beat me.

On Saturday 5^th September I start a 9 day challenge to cycle to John O’Groats from Lands’ End – Typically over 110 miles each day. It’s part of the Deloite RAB – Ride Across Britain which is, at least organised but with no home comforts, we sleep on mats in pop tents.

I have fitted in training and last Saturday I did a ‘back to back’ 35 miles and then on Sunday 75 miles to Weymouth and back for a coffee and ice cream. I am certainly getting  of a feel for what’s ahead “the words sore legs, arse and shoulders in one sentence come to mind as well as numb toes and fingers. I am discovering the pain of mild chaffing – what it’ll be like when it’s not mild is something I do not look forward to.

The Royal Marines Charitable Trust fund is the main charity of the Royal Marines which supports those who need lifetime support after receiving injuries through the recent conflicts in particular. Many years ago in The Falklands it could, so easily have been me – so my putting up with a bit of discomfort and doing something iconic which everyone knows is damn hard might help persuade you to donate and show your support … please.

960 miles in 9 days – that’s a lot of painkillers, yukky energy gels, uncomfortable nights and worry about ‘tomorrow’s weather’ never ending hills and headwinds.
